Copyright Laws
Copyright protects the rights of authors of literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain intellectual works. One major limitation to the rights of authors is the doctrine of 鈥渇air use鈥� - the use of a copyrighted work for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship and research. Colleges and universities-especially libraries- often grapple with balancing the need to disseminate copyrighted works for teaching and scholarship purposes, with the need to protect authors鈥� rights.
